As followers of Christ, we are called to speak truth to power — and that is exactly what our congregation and community partners are doing here in Memphis.
Recently, Pastor Keith Caldwell, President of the Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope (MICAH), appeared on Roland Martin’s program to address the federal task force that has occupied our city for nearly 180 days. His message was clear: this was never truly about public safety. It has been about control — specifically, control over a majority-Black city.
What We Know
Crime in Memphis was already trending downward before the task force arrived. What has gone up is fear. Immigrant neighbors are afraid to go to work. Children are missing school. Families are living under a cloud of anxiety and uncertainty. Real safety comes from investing in people — through affordable housing, fully funded schools, reliable transportation, and an end to racial profiling.
Our Faith Calls Us to Act
As Pastor Caldwell reminded us, even Moses was called to go before Pharaoh and demand that public policy change. Without changing policy, nothing truly changes. We are proud to be part of a growing, nonviolent movement in Memphis that brings together Black, Latino, and low-income white residents in a shared pursuit of justice and dignity.
Looking Ahead to April 4th
As we approach the annual commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination at the Lorraine Motel, we are committed to doing more than ringing a bell. We are carrying forward the agenda of Dr. King, Reverend Jim Lawson, and all those who gave their lives for justice. Join us April 4th and 5th as we gather at Claybourne Temple to renew that commitment together.
We will not negotiate with injustice. We will not be silent. And we will not stop.
