Rev. Roger A. Hopson, a native of Savannah, Tennessee, graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a B.S. in Education. He received his Master of Divinity, with honors, at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, where he was a Crusade Scholar, preaching tutor and recipient of the prestigious Isaac R. Clark Preaching Award.

He is District Superintendent of the Clarksville District in the Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church. Rev. Hopson has served as a pastor and as District Superintendent of the Paris District, Memphis Conference Director and Associate Director of Connectional Ministries, Executive Assistant to the Nashville Area Bishop of the United Methodist Church and as a delegate to the United Methodist General Conference.

He has been a trainer for new district superintendents and is a popular preacher, teacher, consultant, conference speaker, study leader and retreat leader. He has been a member of the board of directors for the General Commission on Religion and Race and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry.

A former high school teacher and newspaper columnist, he is married to Dr. Cynthia Bond Hopson and their co-authored book, I Do…Every Day, Words of Wisdom for Newlyweds and Not-so Newlyweds, was released in 2011 and is an Abingdon Press bestseller. They have two children, Marcos (Regina) and attorney Angela Hopson, and four grandchildren, Kiera, Terrell, Maya, and Morgan.
In addition to leading the congregation at Centenary, Rev. Hopson will direct an area-wide initiative, Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century, a program designed to assist United Methodist churches with predominantly Black congregations to become effective in mission and ministry.
