Centenary Day Camp: Tremendous Success

Victor Hugo once said that not even the marching of mighty armies can stop an idea whose time has come. What was only an idea last summer, thanks to the hard work of Autura Hampton, has become reality, and our first summer day camp has been a tremendous success! With 24 enrollees, one full-time staff person, five part-time youth counselors (Teresa Hardin, Horace "Chucky" Ford, Krissi Cain, Marsha Jones, and Chris Colehill); one

substitute counselor (Desmond Pegues), three part-time youth counselors hired through the Mayor's Summer Youth Program (Creshun Pruitt, Kendra Gunn, and Anecia Jones); and a half-time church secretary (Kia Cain), we're going full speed ahead!

In addition to the traditional summer camp activities like swimming, games, and field trips, camp kids have also enjoyed computer literacy training, reading skills enhancement, math camp, drama camp. They have taken trips to the library, the Children's Museum, and the Ornamental Mental Museum. All these activities have been made possible by the contributions of adult volunteers like Natasha Grider, Erma Williams, Chirelle Jefferson, Vivian Whatley and Geralyn Seals. Traci Milam and Terran Cook (both cheerleaders from the University of

Memphis) teach a dance class twice weekly; Head Over Heels Gymnastics comes in once a week, and Christ First Martial Arts teaches their unique blend of karate and Christian principles on Tuesdays.

Through the generosity of people like Mrs. Ruth Hicks, Dr. Marie Milam, and the United Methodist Women, scholarships have been made available for both campers and dance class participants.

Any way you look at it, our first summer day camp has been a tremendous success and we did it with the help of God, our own resources, our own resourcefulness, and our own people! n
